Inspection (COI)

Manitoba light vehicle safety inspection. Separate from every other check.

For eligible vehicles within Standard’s current inspection station and mechanic permit classes. A COI records whether the vehicle meets Manitoba’s applicable basic safety standards at the time it is inspected.

What the certificate means

A safety result at one point in time.

A COI is the official regulated inspection lane. The result may be Pass, Advisement or Fail based on the applicable standards and condition observed during the inspection.

Current MPI COI guidance
It confirms

The vehicle met the applicable basic Manitoba safety standards when inspected.

It does not promise

Future reliability, overall vehicle quality, value or a complete engine and transmission assessment.

COI process

Inspect. Record. Repair if needed. Verify.

Inspection results cannot be negotiated. An authorized mechanic applies the same safety standard to every accepted vehicle.

  1. 01

    Confirm eligibility

Share the VIN, GVWR from the door label, registration, vehicle use and the paperwork you need.

  2. 02

    Complete the COI

A mechanic authorized for the applicable class performs and records the regulated inspection.

  3. 03

    Review any defects

Repairs are separately explained, estimated and authorized. You decide where permitted repairs are completed.

  4. 04

    Check again and issue

The required certificate is issued only after the vehicle meets every applicable requirement.

After a failed inspection

Repair every listed item, then confirm the return process.

Contact Standard after the required repairs are complete. An authorized mechanic must verify that the applicable requirements have been met before a certificate can be issued. Timing, scope and fees are confirmed before the return appointment.

Safety standards are not negotiable

Incomplete, concealed or other repairs that do not meet the standard will not pass.

Safety checks cannot be bypassed or negotiated. If a repair does not meet the applicable standard, the vehicle must be corrected before it can pass.

COI answers

Know exactly which inspection you are booking.

For a broader condition assessment, use the Vehicle Pre Purchase Inspection or Courtesy and Multi Point Inspection lane instead.

01Is a COI a complete engine or transmission inspection?

No. It confirms that the vehicle met Manitoba’s applicable basic safety standards at the time of inspection. It is not a detailed powertrain assessment or a warranty of the vehicle’s overall condition.

02What happens if the vehicle fails?

You receive the inspection result and can authorize repairs at Standard, use another repair facility or complete permitted repairs yourself. The vehicle passes only after an authorized mechanic verifies that all applicable requirements have been met.

03How does a COI reinspection work?

If a COI does not pass, complete every required repair and contact the inspection station before returning. The station will confirm the applicable reinspection process, timing and fee before the vehicle comes back.

04Does Standard inspect taxis or vehicles in the PMVI program?

No. Standard Repair does not currently offer taxi, commercial or Periodic Mandatory Vehicle Inspection programs. We confirm vehicle class, manufacturer GVWR, use and permit eligibility before accepting a COI booking.
